SUMMARY:Packraft Expedition Training | Owyhee River June 7 - 11\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Join our 5 day Packraft Expedition Training to gain all the essential skills you need to feel confident to lead your own packraft expeditions. After acquiring essential skills from prior packraft-specific training with SSI or another approved course provider\, expedition members will apply these skills during a 5-day trip covering up to 40 miles of downstream travel. Course size is currently limited to 10 expedition paddling members and two instructors. \nThe team will engage in a structured approach to river running\, mastering the art of leading a group of paddlers through a remote river section. Each participant in the trip will be fully self-supported\, carrying their own food\, camp equipment\, and shared group gear. This ensures that paddlers become acquainted with their equipment and develop confidence in their systems. \nThe Packraft Expedition Training takes place in a remote region in Southeast Oregon. The Owyhee River and its tributaries flow through the Owyhee Plateau where they have carved deep\, spectacular canyons\, often with vertical walls that rise\, in some places\, over 1\,000 feet (300 m) above the river. \nPlease understand the cancellation/refund policy prior to registration. \nCOURSE DETAILS \nWHO THIS COURSE IS FOR: \n\nIntrepid expedition travelers that desire the fundamentals of planning and executing a river expedition on their own\nTeam members that do not want a “guided trip” trip\, but want to be active members in the planning process and success of the group while developing personal skills necessary to facilitate future expeditions\nThose that are willing to plug in for planned Zoom training meetings in the preparation process of the expedition\nTeam members that are willing to acquire the gear needed for this expedition and to plan and prepare with others\nAdventure driven individuals willing to adjust to anything that nature may throw at us\nPrevious SSI packrafting students (or a 2 day ACA or equivalent packraft paddling clinic)\n\nONLINE COMPONENT: Two Zoom meeting for planning and prep \nWHEN: June 7 – 11\, 2026 \nWHERE: Boise\, ID (Meeting and Termination point) \nFIELD SITE: Lower Owyhee River \nINSTRUCTOR: Karen Morse \nPREREQUISITES: \n\nProficient swimmer\nPhysically capable\nDesire to learn\nAll of the necessary PPE\nMeet all Essential Eligibility Criteria\n\nABOUT THIS COURSE: \nwhile being forgiving throughout others. The river canyon\, as well as the nature of the whitewater changes throughout the duration of the float. Some days on the water will include long sections of boat-scoutig class II-III\, while other days include class III+ requiring more structured strategies such as river map work\, downstream travel planning\, scouting\, and time management. Throughout the expedition\, members of the team will have the opportunity to design the daily structure to possibly visit several different hot springs\, archaeology sites\, and spectacular side hikes. \n \nKaren began her career in whitewater in 2011\, working as a field staff for Outward Bound on the Deschutes River in Oregon.  Since then she has worked as an instructor\, guide\, and trainer for a variety of rafting programs and outfitters across Oregon\, Idaho\, and Utah.  When she isn’t playing with gearboats\, packrafts\, or rope systems\, Karen teaches Wilderness Medicine\, Avalanche Rescue Courses\, and leads expeditionary courses backpacking and mountaineering.

SUMMARY:(Orig) Swiftwater Boat Operator | Moab\, UT June 8-11\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:The Swiftwater Boat Operator is a 4 day course that is designed to take both novice and experienced on-water boat operators to the next level of operational proficiency. We have a 1:4 instructor craft to agency craft ratio\, and this allows our team of professional trainers to lead agency operators through navigational courses with progressive challenges and objectives. \nTraining slots are available by the number of agency watercraft\, not the number of in-water operators. Trailering your boats to our course sites is necessary for open enrollment courses\, but we commonly travel to a specific agencies response area to conduct the training using your specific rescue crafts. As such\, this course is also customizable to meet the desired training goals of your agency. \nWe do offer a few select rental craft. Please inquire if you are prepared to take this training but are not able to provide your own/Agency watercraft. \nACENCY COURSE COSTS: $2495 per agency boat + $10/pp permit fee. $500 non-refundable deposit at the time of registration. The remaining balance will be invoiced with instructions on registering all personnel. Invoices paid by credit card will incur a 3% fee. (You may bring a number of operators consistent with your craft capability – typically 2-3+ operators per boat).  \nPRIVATE OPERATOR COURSE COST (Rental Craft): The course cost is $1975 + $10/pp permit fee per operator and this includes the use of SSI watercraft. $500 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of registration. The remaining balance will be invoiced and there will be a $500 damage deposit per operator assessed with each invoice. All invoices paid by credit card will incur a 3% fee. \nNFPA 1006 & 1670 COMPLIANT: NFPA 1006 Chapter 22 (2021 Version)\, USAR\, FEMA \nWHO THIS IS FOR: Agency personnel with response model capability of responding to flood or swift water events using powered watercraft. \nONLINE COMPONENT: No \nCOURSE FORMAT: We will start out on day 1 with pre-boat launch objectives in the classroom. We will be on the water all days of this course\, and our first day will be spent on water moving roughly 2-3 mph\, with a goal to maintain proper positioning in simulated flood water with foundational skills required for success in swift water. Day 2-4 will quickly progress to up running and down running class II and III rapids while under power as well as in “disabled mode” requiring assisted propulsion. \nThis Swiftwater Boat Operator course will be taught on the Colorado River in Moab\, UT\, and we may see water levels anywhere from 5\,000CFS to 40\, 000CFS. This is highly dependent on Colorado snow pack and melt rate in the Spring. The Colorado River at this location is a free flowing river\, which means that there are no dams impeding or holding back water. It could be low\, it could be high\, we have to be ready to operate during all conditions. \nWHEN: June 8-11\, 2026 \nWHERE: Moab\, UT \nFIELD SITE: Colorado River \nPREREQUISITES: \n\nProficient swimmer\nPhysically capable\nDesire to learn\nPass online training with a minimum 80%\nAll of the necessary PPE\nMeet all Essential Eligibility Criteria\n7. All agency personnel must have previously completed a PRO-I or equivalent.\n8. Agency watercraft with all necessary tool kits\, spare props\, fuel filters etc.\, You need to bring everything you would if you were responding to an actual event.\n9. Meet all Utah State Boating Regulations Criteria\n\nGEAR FOR THIS COURSE:\nThe welcome packet details the gear you will need for this course. As an SSI student\, you get access to student pricing in the SSI Gear Shop! Once you register you’ll have access to the shop through your SSI account. \nABOUT THIS COURSE: \nThis Swiftwater Boat Operator course is designed and taught by professional instructors that actually work on USAR teams and recreate using motorized boats in a variety of river conditions from class I – IV. We don’t teach this course on ponds or lakes\, we teach this course in very dynamic river environments designed to challenge both instructor and students to make real-time decisions and take the training to the next level. It’s a progressive course over several days\, and we build on boat operation fundamentals to allow the student to gain confidence and critical driving skills with ample throttle time.
