SSI’s swiftwater boat operator course is designed for active USAR, fire, rescue and public-safety boat operators who need defensible decision-making and repeatable performance in fast water.
Students work through boat selection, rigging, launch and recovery, ferry angles, current navigation, crew coordination and rescue evolutions. Training progresses from core control skills into complex scenarios, including low-light operations.

Day 01
Systems & Fundamentals
Equipment readiness, hydrology review, craft characteristics, launch systems and baseline control.
Day 02
Precision Handling
Ferries, eddy work, obstacle management, crew movement and controlled approaches.
Day 03 + Night
Rescue Integration & Night Ops
Access, contact, recovery, and complex boat-and-shore operations that continue into low-light conditions.
Day 04
Mission Scenarios
Full-mission problem solving, complex boat operations and final performance verification.
Prerequisites
Arrive operationally ready.
- Swiftwater or Flood Rescue training – PRO-I, or documented equivalent training.
- No formal boat operations experience or training necessary.
- Ability to meet SSI’s Essential Eligibility Criteria.
Student Equipment
Bring mission-ready PPE.
- Agency-approved swiftwater PPE appropriate to the operating environment.
- Helmet, PFD, thermal protection, footwear, gloves and personal lighting.
- Additional equipment specified in the course confirmation package.
