SSI Registration & Refund Policy
Know the terms before you register.
Course registration reserves limited instructional capacity and is a financial commitment. Unless a course is specifically identified below as having separate terms, the standard cancellation and transfer policy on this page applies to registrations paid directly to Swiftwater Safety Institute.
All cancellation, transfer and substitution requests must be submitted in writing through the SSI contact form. Deadlines are calculated in calendar days before the published course start date, based on the date SSI receives the written request.
When You Cancel
Refund eligibility is determined by notice date.
15–29 Days Before
Fifty percent of tuition is refunded per attendee. The remaining fifty percent is forfeited.
14 Days or Fewer
No refund, future-course credit or transfer is available. The full tuition amount is forfeited.
No-shows, withdrawals after a course begins, late arrivals that prevent participation, and removal for failing to meet course, conduct or safety requirements do not qualify for a refund, credit or transfer.

30 or More Days Before
You may transfer to another SSI course in the current season at no additional cost, subject to availability and eligibility.
15–29
15–29 Days Before
A $150 transfer fee per attendee applies to a different SSI course in the current season, subject to availability and eligibility.
0–14
14 Days or Fewer
No transfers are allowed. The standard cancellation terms for this time period apply.
College and university courses: When transferring from an SSI-sponsored course to a course administered through a college or university, you must register through that institution. SSI will cancel the original order and deduct the non-recoverable 3% credit-card transaction fee.
Participant substitutions: Replacing one attendee with another is not automatically permitted. Substitutions require SSI’s written approval before the course begins, and the replacement must satisfy every prerequisite and registration requirement.

Medical Documentation
SSI offers a 50% refund when a physician’s note describing the illness, treatment and course restriction is received before the published course start date. Documentation received on or after the start date does not qualify.

Travel & Personal Conflicts
Airfare, lodging, transportation, work conflicts, family circumstances, travel delays and other personal expenses or disruptions do not change the refund or transfer deadlines. SSI is not responsible for participant travel or lodging costs.

Water, Weather & Location
River sections, training sites, schedules and course activities may be adjusted because of flows, weather, access or safety conditions. A reasonable operational adjustment is not an SSI cancellation and does not create refund eligibility.
SSI strongly recommends considering third-party trip-cancellation and interruption coverage, such as Travel Guard, to protect travel and tuition expenses that fall outside this policy.

Expedition & Boat Operator Courses
Expedition Courses and Swiftwater Boat Operator Courses have stand-alone refund terms and require a $500 non-refundable deposit per craft. Locations or river sections may change with flow conditions.

Instructor Development
Instructor Development Training Courses are non-refundable.

Military & SPEC-OPS
Military and SPEC-OPS training is non-refundable once a contract has been approved and paid.
If SSI Cancels
Your course tuition is protected.
If SSI cancels a course, you may rebook another eligible SSI course or receive a full refund of the course tuition paid to SSI. SSI may cancel because of safety concerns or other operational circumstances. Refunds are limited to course tuition paid to SSI; participant airfare, lodging, transportation, lost wages and other expenses are not reimbursed.
Third-Party Course Providers
The organization that takes payment controls the refund.
If you register or pay through an approved SSI course provider, college, university or other organization, that provider’s published refund and transfer policy applies. Contact that provider directly. If the provider has no identifiable refund policy, the SSI policy on this page applies.
Merchandise purchases are governed separately by the Merchandise Order Return Policy.

By completing a registration or purchasing course tuition, the purchaser and attendee acknowledge the applicable refund, transfer, cancellation and program-specific terms. If anything is unclear, contact SSI before registering.
